Jadu bridges the ‘skills gap’ between PHP and .NET developers to enable corporate use of open source web tools

Jadu extends its PHP-based platform to work natively in .NET, signalling first step in increased corporate use of open source web tools.

The disparate worlds of PHP, the language which dominates the internet, and Microsoft's .NET framework, have today moved a step closer together, thanks to an innovation from Jadu. The content management company has funded and supported the development of the 'Phalanger' PHP compiler for the .NET Framework. This paves the way for greater website innovation, bridging the skills gap and cutting the cost of application development.

The Phalanger system enables the compilation of PHP applications, which can then be run natively under the .NET Framework. Jadu is enabling businesses to harness the phenomenal popularity of applications such as WordPress or MediaWiki, the software that powers Wikipedia. This can be achieved without the need to migrate to open source PHP, leaving the security and existing investment in a .NET / Visual Studio developer environment.

Jadu has funded the native support in Visual Studio for PHP applications using Phalanger as well as the Jadu PHP based API. This enables developers using the Jadu CMS framework to code in their language of choice, such as C# or VB.NET.

When we found Phalanger, it opened up a powerful and innovative way to work across platforms. At Jadu, our core development strategy is to develop truly agnostic, cross platform technologies - usable by anyone and any organisation.

Suraj Kika, Jadu CEO

"This development creates a world of possibilities for organisations and developers," adds Suraj. "They are no longer tied to the respective communities and the limitations of either platform, but can explore, develop and deploy both. Businesses can now cross the 'skills divide' into the new generation of PHP-based applications like WordPress. In addition, developers can take creative new applications to those users previously unable to deploy them because of cost and effort."

"Aside from the huge technological leap, this solves many of the skills issues faced by organisations looking to deploy the new wave of PHP based applications without having to rip out and replace existing infrastructure supporting a .NET platform," he concludes.

We love the way that Jadu is using the Phalanger compiler because it shows the technical and business option of integration between PHP and the .NET world. Now those worlds can work together rather than compete and Jadu is showing how to do it.

Jan Seda, Webtica Director

Jadu's Chief Technology Officer, Richard Chamberlain is responsible for the project: "The marriage of PHP and other .NET languages makes a very powerful development environment - harnessing a wealth of functionality from both PHP and the .NET framework."

About Phalanger

Phalanger can run real word PHP applications, many without minor modifications. It provides a robust platform for PHP applications with many advantages over the traditional PHP interpreter. Being built on top of ASP.NET and the .NET Framework, Phalanger makes PHP applications run faster (due to compilation), easily configurable using the ASP.NET configuration system, more reliable and more secure due to the very well tested, managed environment of ASP.NET.
