Birmingham City Council has been awarded a ‘Special Designation for Innovative Web Design’ at the Adobe Government Creativity Awards.

The global Adobe Government Creativity Awards recognise the best work in connecting government and citizens through technology.

Leicester based design agency Spacecraft - working closely with Birmingham City Council and its residents - led the redesign of Birmingham.gov.uk, which launched in 2016 and is continuously updated.

The Adobe awards are not only judged on design but also on creativity and effectiveness in meeting communication objectives, which makes them a brilliant benchmark,” says Paula Buckley, assistant director, customer service at Birmingham City Council.

Birmingham City Council is the largest local authority in Europe and it’s a continuous challenge to ensure the site works for everyone it needs to, but we’ve been delighted at the positive response from users, and with the awards, which are a testament to the hard work of a lot of people.

The new Birmingham.gov.uk site has previously been recognised in the Webby, Lovie and Plain English Awards.*

User testing was conducted throughout the redesign. We took an agile approach, which enabled continuous iteration and improvement as residents and council stakeholders tried, tested and tried the site again,” says Abi Harrison, Head of UX, Spacecraft.

Eye-tracking played a big part; heat maps enabled us to test pathways based on specific tasks, and to base the redesign on thorough intelligence.
